My daughter born June 2009 received PCV 7 in her first year....

Question:

My daughter born June 2009 received PCV 7 in her first year. June 2010, it was replaced with PCV13. Should she receive a booster with PCV13 for protection against other 6 strains?

Answer:

Children 5-18 years of age who previously completed a series of PCV7 vaccine are not eligible for the publicly funded PCV13 vaccine unless they are at high risk of pneumococcal disease due to asplenia, HIV infection or receipt of HSCT.

However, if you would like your child to be protected against the 6 additional strains not covered in the PCV7 vaccine, you can purchase the PCV13 vaccine.  We recommend that you discuss this further with your immunizing health care provider.
