Good day! My child is having an appointment for DPTP vaccine...

Question:

Good day! My child is having an appointment for DPTP vaccine and varicella on the same day. Does this will be on the same injection site? Thank you.

Answer:

No.  The combined diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio vaccines are given as an intramuscular injection into the deltoid muscle and the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine is given as a subcutaneous injection into the upper outer tricep area (these are the preferred sites for these vaccines in children greater than 12 months of age). These vaccines can be given in the same arm (but different injection sites) or in different arms.
